Crescent Overload is an Action 3D Platformer set in a 2000s-era video game prototype. You play as AL.exe, a newly programmed "Proto" who explores abandoned storage drives in search of figuring out a way to finish the game. Over time, you'll meet other Protos, the ever-present SUPERUSER, dangerous viruses, and forces that don't want the game to end.
AL.exe wields a complex move set, pushing the "expressive platformer" genre forwards. She can jump, dash, and preform attacks with her Gear Scythe to hook herself up walls and slice through the air. Every combination of inputs results in different movement abilities. Fans of 3D Platformers will feel right at home - your mastery of the move set and platforming skills will be tested.
Crescent Overload is not a collectathon or course-clear experience. To reach the end, you will have to learn the secrets of this world and see things with a different perspective. This game is a mishmash of multiple genres and attempts to, really, just do its own thing.
An Intertwined World of drives inspired by different Y2K artstyles and graphic design movements.
Hack n' Slash through enemies with fluid melee combat fused with intense bullethell sensibilities.
Secrets and Hidden Mechanics to discover that change the way you view the environment, and the game itself.
Collectibles hidden around the levels to upgrade your health and combat finesse.
Knowledge-based Design that allows you to tackle the game in whatever order you'd like. Progress isn't gated by unlocking anything - only by what you know.
After releasing two 3D Platformers inspired by the classics, I wanted to have one more go at the genre with my own twist. Eventually, I found inspiration in nostalgia - particularly in the Y2K era I grew up in and its revival in the mid 2020s. Drawing from works of multiple mediums from the likes of Digimon, Porter Robinson, Outer Wilds, RWBY, and so on - I sought to create a stylish 3D Platformer for long-term fans of the genre that incorporates the bittersweet feelings of nostalgia that most 20-30 year olds feel nowadays.
Crescent Overload began development late 2023 as a prototype and has been evolving into what you see today. I am working part-time on this project while working a full-time job, which is both a blessing and curse. Although progress is obviously slower, I'm also not concerned about this game being a commercial success, and therefore I'm pouring more of my artistic soul into this one. I don't think this game is for everyone, but that's a good thing.
From Nov 2024 to Feb 2025, multiple composers were brought on to create tracks for each area in the game. The rest of the game is being handled by myself.
Crescent Overload is planned for release in 2025 on PC.
